How to install GIMP in Fedora Linux?

Prerequisites

  • A system running on Fedora Linux( here I will use Fedora 34 workstation)
  • Access to a user account with sudo privileges

How to install GIMP in Fedora

There are several ways of installing GIMP on a Fedora system. You can use one of the given methods to install it on your system.

Method 1: Installing GIMP using dnf command

GIMP is available in the Fedora repository you can search and install it from the Fedora Software application OR use the following command if you want to install it through your terminal –

sudo dnf install gimp

Press y and then enter when it asks for your confirmation.

Method 3: Installing GIMP using Flatpak package

Flatpak is another way of building, distributing, and running sandboxed desktop applications on a Linux system. By default, Flatpak comes installed on Fedora but if you do not have Flatpak installed then first use the following commands to install it else you can directly run the installation command –

sudo apt install flatpak -y

Next, add the Flathub repository by using the given command –

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

Now use the following command to install GIMP on your system –

flatpak install flathub org.gimp.GIMP

Method 2: Installing GIMP using Snap package

Snaps are containerized packages that can be used across the different distributions of Linux. So to install the GIMP snap package on your Fedora system, first, you need to install and configure the Snap package manager.

Use the following command to install it –

sudo dnf install snapd

Type the y and then press the Enter key if it asks for your confirmation.

Once the installation is completed restart the snap services by using –

sudo systemctl restart snapd

Some packages come in classic, so you need to create a symlink to enable classic snap support –

sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap

Now install the snap core files so that snap works correctly on your system –

sudo snap install core

Finally, use the given command to install the GIMP package on your system –

sudo snap install gimp

Apart from these three, you can also install GIMP on your Fedora system from its source, for that first you need to download the source code of GIMP and then build and install it on your system.

Launch GIMP application in Fedora

Once the installation is completed, you can launch it by searching gimp in the Fedora application launcher as you can see in the image below.
