How to install VMware Workstation Pro in Ubuntu?

If you want a more advanced virtualization solution then you should use VMware Workstation Pro. It comes with enhanced features such as accelerated graphics support, a new dark mode interface, support for Window hyper-V mode, a CLI for supporting containers and Kubernetes clusters.

It offers a free trial of 30 days, if you have a product key you can enter it to activate while the installation of the software.

In this article, we will discuss how to install VMware Workstation Pro in Ubuntu.

System requirements

The minimum recommended configuration of the system where you want to install VMware Workstation Pro is given below.

  • A recent 64-bit version of Ubuntu
  • minimum 4 GB RAM
  • x86_64 CPU, with Intel VT-x/AMD-V/SVM

Installing VMware Workstation Pro in Ubuntu

Follow the steps that are given below to install VMware Workstation Pro in a Ubuntu system.

Install required dependencies

Use the following command to install the required build packages –

sudo apt install build-essential -y

Download VMware Workstation Pro package

To download VMware Workstation Pro go to the download page on its official website. In the “Workstation Pro for Linux” section click on DOWNLOAD NOW.

Set required permissions on the downloaded file

You need to set executable permissions on the downloaded file, to make it executable open your terminal and run the following command –

chmod +x ~/Downloads/VMware-Workstation*

Use the correct path to your downloaded file to make it executable.

Installing VMware Workstation Pro

Now it’s time to run the installer file to install VMware Workstation Pro on your system. Open your terminal and execute the given command –

sudo ~/Downloads/VMware-Workstation*

This will extract and start installing packages once completed you will see the given message in your terminal.

Start the VMware Workstation Pro in Ubuntu

Once the installation is successful search the Vmware in Ubuntu activities dashboard when you see the icon as given in the image below click on it to run the application.

Next, you will be prompted to accept the license, review it and select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click on Next.

Next, you need to accept the license for the VMware OVF Tool component for Linux again select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click on Next.

Next, if you want to join the VMware customer experience improvement program then select Yes and then click on Next.

Finally, enter the product key if you have otherwise select I want to try VMware Workstation 16 for 30 days and click on Finish.
